Experiences in Port Douglas

Port Douglas in a day

Port Douglas hotels

Freshly fed, you are going to take a half day trip to the Daintree Rainforest to discover the largest tropical rainforest in Australia. This section of forest is one of the most biologically diverse in the world and is home to THE highest number of rare or endangered animal and plant species to be found anywhere on earth. So, basically what you have is Mother Nature’s piece de resistance right on your door stop. A half day tour leaves from town at 7:30 am and will deposit you back in the area at 12:30pm. While exploring the rainforest with your guide, you will have the chance to take a dip in Cassowary Falls and take a cruise down the Daintree River.

With one World Heritage site ticked off the “to do” list, cast your eyes eastward to get to know the Great Barrier Reef. The afternoon should be spent out on the water with a swimming, snorkelling or diving cruise. There are endless swimming and diving sites out from Port Douglas that are utilized by reef tour companies. Each day the choices will vary according to the individual conditions of the day. For this reason, many visitors choose to do more than one reef tour while staying in town. Depending on the time of year, you may even strike it lucky and get to share your swimming experience with minke whales! On every cruise operating out of Port Douglas crystal clear warm waters, startling varieties of coral and tropical fish come as standard.

First thing in the morning rise, shine and strap on your walking shoes to take a stroll along Four Mile Beach. Watch the sun rise as you tread the soft, white sands and enjoy seeing and hearing the birdlife wake up and start their day and take in the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea. Stop along the way at one of the beachside cafes for an early breakfast to prepare for your first adventure for the day.

When you arrive back at the marina after your cruise, take the time to wander around the marina and sticky beak at the impressive multi million dollar yachts and sea vessels that are moored there. There is plenty of shopping to be done at the Marina Mirage and loads of high end dining too – you are allowed to have a little snack here, but save your appetite for a sensational dinner later on. Why not enjoy a sundowner instead while looking out over the marina.

Dinner is at the Flames of the Forest rainforest dinner dining experience. This is perhaps one of the most romantic places that you can imagine. As the name suggest, this is much more than a meal, it is an experience that ignites all of your senses. Just 10 minutes from town the venue offers two distinct dining experiences during the week – a journey through aboriginal culture in a jungle forest playground and on the weekends, an exclusive marquee dining experience out in the inky darkness of the rainforest. This is a must do when you are staying in town and the seal on wonderful day playing in a tropical paradise.

There will be few times in your life when you spend such a magical day on earth. One thing is for sure, Mother Nature was on fire the day that the area around Port Douglas was created: go ahead and discover it for yourself.
